Amazon Jail 2 (1987)

Welcome back to B-Movie Enema and the continuation of the Amazon Jail saga with Conrado Sanchez’s Amazon Jail 2!

This month, we’ve got a set of releases from Vinegar Syndrome in 2023. We looked at the first film of the Amazon Jail duology last week. We finish that up this week and move on to some more fun next week. We’re going to be able to get right into the movie very quickly because these movies are wildly obscure so there’s not much of note I can really dive into in the background.

I will follow up on what I discussed for a short bit last week and say this comes from the later days of the Mouth of Garbage exploitation movement in Brazil. That began in the 70s out of Sao Paulo and tackled sex comedies for the most part as well as horror and action films. By this time, a regime change in Brazil led to the loosening of censorship in cinema so porno films began to be produced by the time Amazon Jail 2 was released.

Amazon Jail (1985)

Welcome to this week’s B-Movie Enema!

You know what? I’m kind of excited this week. Why? We’re going to look at some old favorites in terms of a distributor and subgenres. First up, we have a return from Vinegar Syndrome. What a heck of a boutique distributor of physical media. If you have a desire to see obscure horror and thrillers, sexploitation films, or general exploitation from other countries, there’s no one better.

I’ve got a ton of their releases. I’m not one of those types who gets everything from them, but I have a fair amount of their releases. Let’s be honest… They are a wonderful pipeline for content on this blog. So, when they put out some kooky releases in 2023, I had to jump on board with the entire intent to feature it here in February 2024.

In that release slate for 2023, there was a two-pack that we’re diving into this week and next. We start things off with Amazon Jail from Oswaldo de Oliveira. This was the final film of Brazillian director de Oliveira as he would die five years later at the age of 58 or 59. He worked as a cinematographer, writer, director, and occasionally appeared in some of his films. He comes from Brazil’s “Mouth of Garbage” movement. I feel like I should put quotation marks around or italicize the word movement here, but I trust Vinegar Syndrome’s tastes and film analysis. Apparently, we’re going to be in for a hell of a ride with this subgenre of Brazilian cinema as this is a movement that produced a whole lotta crazy genre films that included horror, action, sex comedies, and pornography.

Escape from Women’s Prison (1978)

Well, well, well… Last week I did one of those rape revenge exploitation films from the 70s. The week before, I revisited a horror film I once saw on Bizarre TV. Now, I’m looking at a good ol’ fashioned women in prison films. It’s like I’m on a greatest hits of B-Movie Enema tour.

Yes, it’s time to take a look at 1978’s Escape from Women’s Prison. You know what other box this movie ticks? Oh yeah… It’s Italian, baby! This movie was written and directed by Italian actor Giovanni Brusadori. In the director credit, he’s actually credited as Conrad Brueghel, but whatever. Brusadori was best known for appearing in the Laura Gemser Emanuelle: Queen of the Desert in 1982. For whatever reason, he decided to make a movie this time around. Now, supposedly, George Eastman, star of Anthropophagus, Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, and Porno Holocaust, co-wrote this movie on (though without credit).

I guess what I’m getting at is that these types of late 70s and early 80s Italian sleazefest movies were all made by a small group of people so it shouldn’t surprise anyone to see George Eastman involved in some way.

Bloodsucking Freaks (1976)

Oh boy, do we have a LOT to talk about in this new B-Movie Enema. article.  Oddly, the movie itself, Joel M. Reed’s controversial Bloodsucking Freaks from 1976, doesn’t really have a lot to discuss in terms of what is seen on the screen (don’t worry, I will be calling play-by-play nonetheless).  No, there are two topics in particular to discuss in much greater detail.

I’m not entirely sure where to start with this, so let’s start with the director, Joel M. Reed.  He unfortunately passed away in a care facility in New York City just earlier this year.  He’s one of the many unfortunate casualties due to the global pandemic that is COVID-19.  He’s likely known best for making this movie, which drew the ire of many, many people when it was released.  The release of the movie also had a couple alternate titles like The Incredible Torture Show and Sardu: Master of the Screaming Virgins.  However, almost everyone knows this movie by the title Bloodsucking Freaks.  That’s the name applied to it by Lloyd Kaufman when Troma came along to take over the distribution of the movie.

That began a long relationship with Kaufman that lasted up until Reed’s passing. Continue reading “Bloodsucking Freaks (1976)”

Caged Heat (1974)

Oh baby do we have lots to talk about today, my dear Enemaniacs!

This week’s B-Movie Enema is Caged Heat.  It might, at first, come off as just a run of the mill, women-in-prison flick from the mid-70s.  It might even come off as some of that sleaze Roger Corman was trading in during the 70s as well.  To a very minor degree, I’d say you’re right about both things.

But… there’s a twist.  You see, Corman wasn’t happy with the women-in-prison flicks previously released by his New World Pictures.  He thought they were maybe missing something, something important, something fresh and new.  So he tapped a producer at the studio to see what life can be breathed into this subgenre of exploitation.  Enter Jonathan Demme.  He had produced a previous Corman women-in-prison release, The Hot Box.   This time, though, Demme wasn’t going to settle as a writer or producer.  He wanted to direct. Violence in a Women’s Prison (1982)

Ah…  Women in prison flicks.  I almost feel like I’m home after that literal trip through hell last week.  What’s interesting is that this movie sort of has a connection to that bonkers Bruceploitation movie.

Violence in a Women’s Prison stars Laura Gemser, an Indonesian actress who starred in a lot of Euro-trash exploitation fair.  She starred in X-rated stuff too.  This is mostly due to her playing “Black” Emanuelle.  Yeah…  Remember the “femme fatale” in last week’s movie?  Her name was Emanuelle too.  So what’s that all about? Continue reading “Violence in a Women’s Prison (1982)”

Amazon Hot Box (2018)

In August, I attended HorrorHound Weekend in my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana.  As a veteran of various comic conventions and previous HorrorHound shows, it’s an experience I love.  Do I spend too much money?  Oh, for sure.  Is it a lot of walking around and looking at the same thing over and over as if I’m driving an IndyCar around the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway?  Kind of.  But what I enjoy can be summed up fairly easily by saying I enjoy the time with friends, buying stuff, and sometimes, sometimes, finding something new that I wouldn’t normally be aware of.

That brings me to a couple movies I’ll cover between now and the end of 2018 – Amazon Hot Box and Space Babes from Outer Space.  The former being this week’s featured film. Continue reading “Amazon Hot Box (2018)”
