Friday the 13th Part X – To Hell and Back (1995)

Ah, the fan film. Pretty much from the moment home movie equipment became available to laypeople in the 1950s, people were shooting home movies. Aside from the basic recording of familial moments like Christmases, birthdays, Jimmy’s first orgy with Sally from across the street and that busload of Yugoslavian carnies passing through town that one summer, and the like, people liked making their own big, Hollywood adventures.

My grandpa liked making a bunch of silly movies with my mom and aunt and my oldest brother. My other two brothers had a Super 8 camera in the 70s and 80s and made lots of home movies. This wasn’t quite like the VHS camcorders and digital cameras that came in my day. Oh no… Most of the time it was silent. If you wanted sound, my brothers had to painstakingly overdub their dialog while watching the movie through a projector.

Fan films existed pretty much from the get-go too. In the 50s, I’m willing to bet lots of families dressed their little kids up as Bogey and Bacall or Superman and Lois. Shit, my brothers made a movie called Grime as a take on the immensely popular Grease. Their movie starred hunky heartthrob John Travoltastein. Anyway… Horror, established sci-fi properties, and superheroes tend to be general go-to genres for fan films nowadays.

And this is what we have here – 1995’s Friday the 13th Part X – To Hell and Back starring a bunch of teenagers.

Dark Angel: The Ascent (1994)

Let’s get back into the depths of Full Moon Features!

In the 90s, Full Moon was killing it. They were pumping out movie after movie after movie thanks to the boom of video stores and cable television. You could make a handful of movies very inexpensively and, instead of the promotional costs to get the word out about a featured film in theaters, processing prints, making the deals with theaters to show the movie, etc., all you had to do is mass produce VHS tapes. It would also be easy to sell your movie to HBO and Showtime as well. The profit margin was much higher and you could turn that money right around into more movies for video stores and cable TV.

And, hey, and if you add a little sexy shenanigans with a pretty lead actress – even better! That’s certainly what we have for you this week. Showgirls (1995)

I mean… Sure.

Why not cover 1995’s NC-17 rated, all pomp and circumstance but failed at the box office with a whimper Showgirls? This is directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas who had previously teamed up for one of the all time greats in the world of erotic thrillers with 1992’s Basic Instinct and again right away with 1993’s Sliver. Verhoeven was always a big fan of the big musicals from studio MGM and wanted to make one himself. Eszterhas was in one of the worst moments of his life.

This is what you can accomplish with a little hope to make a big musical while your writer buddy is in the deepest dumps of his life. The film obviously is not what most would expect from this duo. Eszterhas has often stated that there were clearly mistakes made. Plus, that whole thing with him being in a dark place meant he wasn’t being as clever or witty as he normally could be. Virgin Hunters (aka Test Tube Teens from the Year 2000, 1994)

David DeCoteau is back under one of his many pseudonyms, Ellen Cabot. One year after Cabot/DeCoteau made the epic Beach Babes from Beyond, he teamed up again with Full Moon Features’ sexier production company subsidiary, Torchlight Entertainment, for another sex comedy. That’s the topic of this week’s B-Movie Enema – Virgin Hunters!

Now, the title Virgin Hunters was the original name of the movie, however, there was a bit of an issue with the explicit nature of the title. So, in order for Full Moon’s usual home video partner, Paramount Pictures, to release the film, the title would be changed to the more tongue-in-cheek Test Tube Teens from the Year 2000 and slightly less provocative poster and box art was utilized.

Interestingly, Virgin Hunters is now a franchise. A second film was released in 2016 and a third in 2017. You best fuckin’ believe I have those as well and will endeavor to complete the trilogy for you fine Enemaniacs here on the blog. I’m Dangerous Tonight (1990)

Hello and welcome to B-Movie Enema. This week, I’m gonna discuss something I’ve wanted to do for a while – Tobe Hooper’s 1990 made-for-television thriller I’m Dangerous Tonight.

Now, the easy joke here is to say that “I’m Dangerous Tonight” is something I’d exclaim after a Crave Case of sliders from White Castle, but… Actually. Wait. That’s a pretty good one. I’m pretty bummed I didn’t lead with that.

Eh… Never mind. There’s a lot here I could discuss. You have Tobe Hooper in the director’s chair. The fact this was a TV movie and not a cinematic release. Mädchen Amick lookin’ gooood. Tammy and the T-Rex (1994/2019)

Every now and then a movie suddenly finds its audience. Take The Rocky Horror Picture Show, for example. Sure, it didn’t find that audience immediately, but within a couple years of release, the mega fans were showing up at midnight showings in costume and so forth. With the advent of home video and the explosion of home entertainment via cable and a video rental store in almost every strip mall as well as even grocery stores, movies that didn’t do so well in theaters suddenly had a second life.

Then comes this curious little direct-to-video movie called Tammy and the T-Rex. Aside from it featuring two very young, and very pretty future stars in Denise Richards and Paul Walker, it was relatively overlooked as a low budget teenage romantic comedy.

Brain Twisters (1991)

The 1990s saw a leap in technology. From 1990 to 1999, the leaps in percentages in the number of households that had computers or word processors of some sort year over year showed that advancements in computer technology took it from the magical boxes that movies told us could almost do anything in previous decades to something that might show up in dens of every house on any street in America. By the mid-90s, the internet would connect people all over the world which, thanks to its capabilities to gather information, at the very least, changed the way students would work on homework and term papers. Either way, with each slight advancement from word processing power to internet to faster internet to shopping, etc., computers started taking over our every day lives.

With the computer industry making those leaps and bounds, naturally Hollywood wanted to cash in on the hype, or the potential terror, of advanced technology at everyone’s fingertips. That’s where this week’s B-Movie Enema, Brain Twisters, comes in. Continue reading “Brain Twisters (1991)” →
